    Happy Couples Kissing

Inspiration for my stories often hits me when I see images of happy couples kissing. I don't care what sexual orientation they are, and I'm not talking the whole porn, hot, tongueing thing. I'm talking love and happiness and an obvious sharing of that joy. It's what makes me want to keep writing stories about relationships. So, today, as I walked into my local gas station to see the new Time Magazine cover, which alternates on the rack between a female and a male same-sex couple kissing, and shows the bold title "Gay Marriage Already Won: The Supreme Court Hasn't Made up it's Mind - but America Has," I can't seem to stop smiling. I now sit at my computer with a ton of fresh ideas just clammoring to get out. The Time article, "How Gay Marriage Won," by David Von Drehle traces the evolution of the same sex marriage argument. You should go give it a read if you havn't already.  Anyway, it's been a while since I posted some of the photos of kissing that have inspired me, and today seemed like a good day to do it. Because love is for everyone, and I'm thrilled that the majority of Americans agree with me.

    Love is in the Air

May is here and love is in the air. The yellow roses we planted in memory of loved ones lost have burst into bloom on our front porch today. Apparently, they really liked the Irish fog that came rolling across our Virginia mountains yesterday. My little doggie, Cinco, who loves me unconditionally, even when I'm a grumpy, irritating, temperamental artist has a birthday in just five short days. She turns eleven on Saturday. One of my favorite family members is graduating from Hollins College grad school that same day, after working full-time and putting herself through school part-time for a very long time, now. I am beyond proud of her and looking forward to a big old mountain family throw down to prove it. Fun will be had by all.

Otherwise, I'm doing what I do. Creating as much art about love, tolerance, and environmental justice as I can. Today, I'm writing about these three subjects, with a little bit of adventure, a whole lot of intrigue, and some science fiction and fantasy all wrapped together. If that sounds good to you, take a peek at Morgan & Holly's story over at The Ravens Crossing today. They're sharing a romantic afternoon together.

Before I go, I want to show the love for all the gorgeous people out there helping in the fight for equality and human rights, like the person who made the lovely photo montage below. It was created a while back in support of same sex marriage. Thanks to everyone who continues standing up to bullies and saying no to hate. From the smallest gestures to the words of support and encouragement to those who give countless hours of their time to advocate for equal rights, you are all showing your love, and today, I return it to you ten fold.

    I Believe in Love.

It's why I write romance. It's the juice that keeps the universe hydrated, the spice that makes it flavorful, the topping on the great big sundae of living. Yep, it's the awesome sauce. And here's the best part. It comes in all shapes and sizes, ages and races, beliefs and sexual orientations. Love is for everyone! No exceptions!

January 25th is National Gay Straight Alliance Day! It's the perfect day to show your love! So join the celebration and get involved with GSA! It's not too late.

And while you ponder how you will celebrate this coming Wednesday, here is a little video SuperJaunky79 made and set to Beyonce's "Love on Top." It made me smile.

    The Elephant Keeper

Earlier, I mentioned that my latest WIP includes elephants. I also promised I would tell you more. So, tonight, I thought I'd keep that promise. I've been knee deep in imaginary elephant dung all day, and I need a break from the story telling.

Incidentally, this photo is of me feeding apple bites to Moja. She and her sister, Jenny, were the first elephants I ever got to know. It was an experience I won't soon forget. They both used to like to explore my person with the ends of their trunks, searching for any treats and nibbles they might find. Moja was particularly good at retrieving these items from my pockets when given half a chance.

Writing this novel has been exhilarating, because I can turn my affection for these huge, beautiful animals into a vibrant story on the page. I get to show my love for elephants  through my character's eyes. The current working title is The Elephant Keeper. Writing this novel has also been much more difficult than I imagined. The memories of my days with the real elephants return, and all my feelings for these animals, many of whom are no longer living, come rushing back.

Because I wanted to honor some of my elephant friends, I've chosen to use a few of their names for my fictional elephant characters. Nita and Teela, two of the friends whose names I've borrowed, both died of a fast-acting and incurable disease that baffled our zoo's veterinarians for some time. I used to love watching these girls interact with each other on exhibit. They shared a powerful family bond and so much obvious affection. Each time I type their names into my story, it's as if, for a moment, I can bring them back to life and enjoy their company again. Nita and Teela, this novel will definitely be dedicated to you!
